Sports at School

The school has a transversal project for learning sports and all the associated skills. This project adapts to different ages, taking into consideration the development of children’s abilities.

It is also intended that throughout their schooling, students acquire knowledge of different sports, from the most conventional to some lesser-known ones. Additionally, the acceptance of game rules, teamwork, effort, and perseverance are some of the skills assimilated holistically.

Sports in Early Childhood Education

At this stage, physical education focuses on two areas: psychomotricity, which is developed internally in classes, and swimming, which is managed by the sports school.

Swimming

In P3, activities begin with the primary goal of helping students adapt calmly to the aquatic environment. Later on, games are incorporated around themes of interest: for example, a paella in Sitges represented by floating noodles and balls that must be “caught” as if they were the ingredients, or collecting chestnuts during the autumn chestnut festival.

In P4, the focus shifts towards more technical skills, aiming for students to gradually stop relying on floats, all while ensuring that no one develops a fear of water.

In P5, students develop individual swimming skills without floats, using additional equipment as needed.

By the end of the early years, students are expected to move confidently in the water, using auxiliary equipment if necessary: pool noodles, balls, etc. Floats are generally phased out by P5 at the latest.

Sports in Year 1 and 2 of Primary School

2 hours of Physical Education and 1 hour of swimming per week.

In Years 1 and 2 of Primary School, we work on appreciating physical activity for well-being and recognising the positive effects of exercise through various activities.

We also develop basic motor skills: movements, jumps, and crawling.

We play traditional games that foster cooperation to achieve shared goals, exploring and experimenting with sensory and perceptive capabilities through our senses.

We perform general and segmental dynamic coordination tasks using balls and work on static and dynamic balance and imbalance.

We use body movement as a tool for expression and communication. Drama activities are included.

Sports in Year 3 and 4 of Primary School

2 hours of Physical Education and 1 hour of swimming per week.

In Years 3 and 4, we develop basic motor skills by increasing self-awareness and practising movements such as spins, jumps, movements, balance, and throws.

As part of body expression activities, we explore the resources of our own body to communicate sensations, emotions, and ideas. We also create a small dance choreography.

Students participate in various traditional group games and pre-sport games, discovering basic strategies related to cooperation and opposition.

Sports in Year 5 and 6 of Primary School

2 hours of Physical Education and 1 hour of swimming per week.

Following the school’s sports programme, the focus is on:

  • Relationship-building games.
  • Physical fitness and the importance of its components: flexibility and speed (specifically worked on in Year 5) and strength and endurance (specifically worked on in Year 6).
  • Healthy habits in sports practice. Understanding the different phases of activity is crucial for achieving maximum performance and preventing injuries. Therefore, warm-ups and stretching are incorporated as indispensable components of any sports discipline.

Additionally, to expand sports knowledge while maintaining pedagogical objectives, we delve deeper into the theoretical and practical aspects of artistic gymnastics. Initially, we focus on floor exercises: somersaults, handstands, cartwheels, etc., progressing to apparatus work: bars, rings, and uneven bars.

We also practise indoor sports such as:

  • Handball
  • Volleyball
  • Racquet sports like badminton
  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Baseball
  • Less common sports like Colpbol or Ultimate.

Other activities that develop spatial and motor intelligence, based on goal-oriented rules, include:

  • Cooperative challenges
  • Problem-solving games

Swimming takes place at the school pool from Years 1 to 5 and at the Sant Jordi pool in Year 6.
